If Junior was not crippling the nation's economy there would be no SS crisis. Sure, there are a lot of baby boomers to retire, but after that comes another period of few retirements and many workers. It's just a matter of riding over the humps in the demographics. That has everything to do with the deficit since Junior is spending the money now that should be used later.

(And spending it most unwisely I might add)

Not true. Bush's overspending is a bad thing, but it has nothing to do with the SS fund. The SS fund assets stored in T-Bills come from the excess cash inflows (our contributions to SS) over outflows (payouts to retirees).

You are mixing issues.
1) Deficit issue
2) social security issue

I think we need to fix both, but the one is not dependent on the other.


They are inextricably connected. The SS surplus has being borrowed to cover budget deficits for years. That's like you owing money to yourself.
