I think zarquawi is being played by the locals as he attempts to play them. Tribal leaders and former baathists are not looking for the talibanization of iraq. But they also want us out and are willing to use bin laden/zarquawi resources and foreign jihadists for tactical reasons. Without us, the ensuing civil war might end up being between sunni natives and the foreigners. Mike

One other point. If these are old baathists leading the nationalists, sans saddam of course, they may be macchievelian enough to cut a deal with the US at some point as well. Wouldnt we be willing to take zarquawi & Co. off their hands at some point in exchange for a role in an iraqi future? mike
