Hi Reid,

I've enjoyed lurking and reading your thread. I've been investing since I was a kid but need to bone up on my TA skills as things have changed so much with computerization and mass movements caused by day traders, programs, hedgies, and faster manipulation.

Most of my trading the past few years has been in fairly illiquid micros and, although I look at TA as rough guides, I pretty much ignore most as I study the fundamentals ad nauseum LOL. I've been extremely successful with this approach, but my eyes are getting tired with all the reading and I've had to cross-examin, in a nice way LOL, my share of CEO's and CFO's.

I do want to thank you for your explanations as it helps those of us who want to get our TA backgrounds up to snuff. I always like to see the "reason" why any theory, including TA, gets prominence. So your explanations of why changes are indicated by certain tools is appreciated. I hate memorizing and prefer to learn by knowing the reason why a TA tool works.

Anyway - I was wondering if any of the readers over here noticed sharp movement into micros over the past couple of days. Many of the ones I follow over on The Microcap Kitchen thread here had large sudden volume and price movements during the sessions, with bullish late movements, despite the general market close. This may be a precursor of the January effect as many were well below highs. It may also have something to do with the changes in the SHO regulations, requiring fixed settlements and trying to fight the naked short problems. Micros tend to have a lot of these issues and are subject to more manipulation both long and short and aren't necessarily liquid enough for good TA analysis.

But Micros have way outpaced the market the past few years.

I was particularly interested, as I know you follow SIRI and the moves there, whether your methods are useful for stuff that moves in extremes on a day basis and what you do when a pattern changes abruptly, either volume and/or price range.

I traded DPAC a couple of times the past couple of sessions. This is a turn around company in RFID area. I'm out now. I noticed unusual volume coming in extended sessions and decided to take a shot. First I put in limit orders to sell my longs well above market. Incredibly, I hit near the high and then bought back in again near lows. Did some other successful trades for scalps.

What I'm getting at was that I looked at a couple of TA websites and their tools but because the history was one of relatively small volume before the past couple of days, there were no real clear indicators. Immediate resistance levels were swept away, tsunami style. I'm looking for tools that may have given me a better way of being more precise with my sell or my buy. I did well, but it may have been more luck, or just my own years of experience, kind of a 6th sense I've developed.

Anyway, sorry for the long post and have a happy healthy new year. Same to sandintoes and others I've crossed paths with over the years!!

Hi Reid,

What is the float? And do you have any info on short interest?

I don't have sources for that stuff for BB stocks because I rarely trade them.

Mo-mo crowd can be powerful.... if the float amounts to less than $25 - $50 million or so, that is within their reach if the average daily volume is low (as it is here).

Average daily volume over the last several months has been less than 100K, which is about $400K -$500K at a stock price of $4 to $5. That's easily manipulated by the mo-mo folks.

Last couple of days, volume has been more like 800K at a stock price of $10 or $11 so, which is also within reach ($8 to 11 million).

It would be interesting to know how recent volume compares with the float. Mo-mos like a small float relative to average daily volume.
