Malcolm,

It's been an interesting couple of hours learning about Indonesian politics.

The prize for comprehensive study and documentation must go to BubbaFred who's post upstream on this thread is well worth spending some time studying.

His choice of disparate sources of information is most impressive.

As to whether or not I've correctly analyzed the situation in Indonesia, the fact remains that there is tremendous financial disparity in Indonesia, though I will admit I may well have been misled by the American corporate media about who it was that attacked the ethnic Chinese merchant class. This article in particular seems to cast many aspersions on the official storyline:

Re: I repeat, stop blaming the Chinese for anti-Chinese racism.

OK. And then who do we "blame" the violence on? The state, as the above article indicates? And should I close my eyes to the historical fact that the Chinese willingly played along with the Dutch imperialists and acted as "middlemen" in the exploitation of Indonesia by the Dutch before Indonesian independence?

Re: Did the Armenians in the Ottoman empire own too many Turkish slaves?

I've read an extensive biography of Ataturk, among other pieces of academic research I've read on the ending of the Ottoman era. It glossed over the genocide of the Armenians, so I have no data. Perhaps you could answer your own question?

Re: Don't manufacture facts to fit your thesis.

Malcolm, I'm one of the least likely SI contributors to manufacture facts. Mostly I pass along URLs, letting others speak for me. I do see in the instance of the 1998 riots in Indonesia that I was very likely misled and disinformed by the American corporate media, whom I was quoting earlier today. Do you blame me for believing what the American corporate media was writing in 1998? I only blame myself for not being more cynical about their real propaganda role back then. I'm older, wiser and vastly more cynical about anything reported by the U.S. Disinformation Ministry today. Too bad that 90% of Americans still trust the media. That ought to shock the world, and it ought to be a wakeup call to Americans.
