I found the Network for Good website to be a useful start:

networkforgood.org

There are different categories from immediate medical/food efforts to longer term redevelopment, so there should be something for most people. I ended up donating to Architecture for Humanity's effort. They are very small, which may scare off some people, but I have found small well focused charities to often be more effective than larger ones.

It is most likely more effective for private citizens to directly donate money to such organizations than to run it through taxes and the US Gov first. I don't think that chain would rate highly on the charity review sites!

The people on SI can most likely afford to share a bit, so please do if you can. We can all make a difference, both to help with the immediate suffering, and the longer term recovery and future safety of those regions.

That may be, but I still wouldn't give one penny to the UN including UNICEF!!!
