It could be that the Sunni's partition would include some of the oil fields in the north or the south, and a battle or two may be fought.

But even if a three state solution is not arrived at a single state where one party feels it's powerless would still lead to insurgent behavior. Which is the reason that I think partitioning is likely. The borders of those states would have to laid equitably, or border wars would be inevitable.
