I think the truth lies somewhere between your position and that of Laz. After we declared war on Japan, Hitler was obliged to declare war on us in accordance with the Axis three-power pact. Hitler's ambitions were confined to conquering Europe and he did not wish to be at war with us, although he might have envisioned that possibility as coming later in the "1,000 year Reich." As for FDR, he didn't want war to get out of the Depression, but was convinced that we needed to save Britain. He believed that the fall of Britain, which was likely, would create a Nazi fortress-Europe which would constitute a grave long-term threat to the Americas. A lot of people today don't realize how uncertain our leaders were in 1941 as to our ability to win a war on two fronts against the combined might of the Axis powers. As it turned out, our victory resulted from a good deal of luck as well as a number of critical mistakes on Hitler's part.

And we were never in danger of invasion or occupation by Germany. German submarines were sinking US ships in sight of American shores. If anything, FDR provoked direct confrontation with Hitler by the material assistance we gave to others. I won't argue that. He gave a "shoot on sight" order respecting German subs months before war. This eas for American destroyers ESCORTING ships carrying war materiel to Britain. FDR was chomping at the bit to go to war in order to get the country out of the depression. I think he simply was a Brit and heart and strongly favored the English.
