Al Arabiya
Liberals against Terrorism blog

Samantha Shapiro has penned an interesting--if flawed--look at the challenges facing Abdul Rahman Al-Rashed, the pro-West general manager of Dubai's Al Arabiya satellite channel. My chief complaint is that the Times Magazine folks bill it as "The War Inside the Arab Newsroom," but Shapiro didn't actually seem to have interviewed anyone from Al Jazeera, which comes across in the piece as essentially the mouthpiece of terrorism. Now, I don't watch either channel (or much TV at all, for that matter), so it's hard for me to gauge the overall accuracy of the charge. But for an article touching on the various ways in which certain elements of the Arab media engage in journalistic malpractice, failing to include quotes from the accused strikes me as a significant oversight. She does include some observations about Al Jazeera from a few close Arab media-watchers, however. Anyway, the piece is definitely worth reading despite my complaints.

(As an aside -- the top image on Al Jazeera's website as of this writing is of American helicopters delivering aid to (Muslim) Indonesia. If you think that sensationalist coverage of American soldiers killing Muslim civilians is harmful, surely you can agree that coverage of American military power being used for humanitarian relief in a Muslim country is good. So don't pooh-pooh symbolism.)

Over to you, Abu Aardvark.
