Hi Ray -

I was surprised that Diego Garcia was so small too.

Your right about Jakarta - Banda Aceh is closer to Diego Garcia

The approaches to the shore will still be shallow - it will take weeks to months for erosion to deepen.

Very roughly, the ability of water to pick up sand particles and gravel is porportional to the square of velocity, and velocity is limited by the cube of depth of water.

So big surges will pick up huge amounts of stuff, much which gets dropped when the velocity drops close to zero as the wave peaks and then reverses.

Normal currents have much slower erosion capabilites.
