TSUNAMI AID SUGGESTION

Re: What is needed is for the private sector to donate the things needed like tents, water to areas that aren't getting rainwater,

I hate to burst your bubble here, but all of the tsunami disaster regions are in the midst of their rainy season. So, that isn't an issue. As far as what the private sector should be donating, it is exactly the same thing that was necessary after the hurricanes in Florida this past summer or in the aftermath of the WTC Tower demolitions. What is needed from the private sector is cash.

Here in Bend, OR, we have an idea that I think is brilliant. A gourmet coffee shop owner thought this up and I'm totally impressed. He's suggested that local coffee merchants lean on their suppliers to provide Indonesian green coffee beans at cost so that he can roast them on the cheap and then sell the beans at full retail and donate $10/lb. from the sale of 5,000 pounds of coffee and donate the entire $50,000 to Medicins sans Frontiere, Oxfam or Amnesty International who have stellar records as superior NGOs.

The whole scheme is brilliant. My additional suggestion was that we involve a local importer who trades in Indonesian handicrafts and make the whole kit and kaboodle available over the Internet and create worldwide sales which will be donated to decent and responsible NGOs.
