re:French sociologist Michel Wieviorka explained the violence as a "response from victims of social exclusion to our society of consumption".

Well, of course. Obviously, it couldn't be that these nice boys just thought they could get away with it.

New Yankee tradition:

Firefighter Arson

Volunteer Firefighters Accused of Arson
NAVARRE, Ohio
- Three volunteer firefighters are accused of intentionally setting a house fire this week so they could respond and put it out. "I just think they wanted to fight a fire," said Police Chief Scott Bauschka. Three men were arraigned on felony charges and released on bond. After the fire was set, Bauschka said, the three men were among 11 volunteer firefighters who responded.

Thibodaux Firefighter Accused of Arson at Grandparents' Home
Thibodaux, La.
- A Lafourche Parish volunteer firefighter put out a fire at his grandparents' home with a garden hose, but was later arrested and accused of setting the fire. Sheriff's deputies say Louis Legendre Junior admitted to investigators that he set fire to the home -- aware that his elderly grandparents were inside -- because "he wanted to be a hero."

Brookville Firefighter Sentenced in Arson Case
Pennsylvania
-- A former Brookville firefighter was sentenced Friday to serve two to six years in state prison after pleading guilty to charges of arson last month. Wade Northey of Brookville was the first defendant in the case to be sentenced in Jefferson County court. Judge John H. Foradora also ordered him to perform 1,000 hours of community service, serve two years probation, and pay a $1,000 fine and $100 victim witness fee as well as court costs.

Colo. Wildfire Starter Seeks New Sentence
A former forestry worker who admitted starting the biggest wildfire in Colorado history asked Wednesday to have her state sentence overturned because the sentencing judge was personally affected by the blaze.

Firefighter Arrests Prompt Arson Probe
The Mountain Creek Volunteer Fire Department is shut tighter than a drum. The department's chief, the assistant chief and his wife face charges of arson.

Firefighter faces felony as arson trial begins
A Stony Point volunteer firefighter is accused of having intentionally set fires for his bored fire fighting company to extinguish. The prosecutor told the jury that malaise and a fraternal culture at the Stony Point firehouse led Takach and others to set blazes, subsequently reporting and extinguishing them.

A call to track firefighter arsonists
The third arrest this summer of a firefighter on suspicion of starting a wildland blaze, this time in San Diego County, has renewed concerns about whether fire services do enough to weed out arsonists in the ranks.

Littwin: Firefighter Arson Not as Unusual as You Might Think
Nobody knows how often firefighter arson occurs. But it happens often enough that the FBI has done a study in which the author, Timothy G. Huff, says he had no trouble finding 25 cases by just asking around. He cited as motives what you could have cited without a study. The most common, he wrote, was excitement. And then there's the hero complex, in which a firefighter, usually young, wants to make his mark.

Arsonists in Their Midst Shame Firefighters
It apparently doesn't happen often. But now that two firefighters have been accused of setting two of the most devastating wildfires in recent memory, arson in the ranks is getting another look.

Do Firefighters Like to Set Fires?
Forensic experts who study arsonists say there is no evidence to support the idea that firefighters are any more prone to sparking fires than anyone else. "It's an urban myth," said Paul Schwartzman, "They're no more highly represented than other groups." His assessment is echoed by Dr. David J. Icove, an engineer and arson specialist with the Tennessee Valley Authority police.

Wambaugh's Latest Book Tells Tale of Arsonist
In his 16th book, he's writing about firefighters -- one in particular who became a serial arsonist, John Orr, a onetime fire captain and noted arson investigator for the city of Glendale in Los Angeles County. Orr was tried and convicted of setting numerous fires, including one at a home improvement store in South Pasadena that killed a woman and her grandson, and a major conflagration known as the College Hills Fire that damaged or destroyed 66 homes in Glendale.

Following fine French Tradition:
PARIS Rowdy revelers in France torched 425 vehicles overnight in scattered New Year's Eve unrest that has become an annual problem in troubled neighborhoods, the national police chief said Sunday. Last year, 333 cars were burned. Police Chief Michel Gaudin also said there were no major clashes this year between youths and police overnight, as had been feared. In what has become an annual tradition every New Year's Eve, youths set several hundred cars ablaze in France as festivities get out of hand....
President Jacques Chirac spoke of the unrest during his annual New Year's Eve television address and urged the French to do more to fight racism and a lack of opportunities in poor neighborhoods — problems that fed frustrations among young rioters.
