As I said I agree with you on Orman, but as absolutes go "always buy term" is one of the better ones. Maybe a better way to put it is "if you don't buy term it should be because you don't mind being ripped off a little to avoid putting time and effort into finding a better solution, or you have very specialized needs combined with a net worth that will allow you to hire a financial consultant instead of getting your advice from the tube."

Estate issues are really the only ones I can think of where a non-term policy could make sense. I believe even those situations are becoming less common between the closing of tax loopholes on the one hand, and the drive to virtually eliminate the estate tax on the other.
