why Indonesians are the only to blame for the plight.
1) Indonesia believed in the 'Asian values' thing and didn't know what their economy was made off. It was a base to produce stuff that no longer was economic to produce in Japan. Complete factories were dismantled there and transported and re-assembled in Indonesia. It had a vibrant Chinindo financed and managed economy.

2) Believing in ones own propaganda is dangerous and follish.

3) They drove the Chinindo class away in the wake of the Asian meltdown.

4) It consistently elected incompetent people after Suharto was kicked out.
