It wouldn't have made a lot of difference at that point. The time to leave the area is when the water gets pulled out. Unfortunately, unless you have some understanding of what is happening, that event attracts people to check out the unusual behavior of the water...


I understand the fascination with the water suddenly pulling out but when you hear a roar in the distance and see a pile of froth a mile out, wouldn't it make sense to get off the beach? From the pics, you can see that many of those people stood there while the wave barrelled down on them.

I would hope that in similar situations, I would have had the good sense to get my butt out of there. Of course, the people a short distance away from the beach didn't stand a chance; they didn't have a clue what hit them.
