I agree that the knapsack may be a thing of the past. The technology seems
fantastic, especially for expensive textbooks that get beaten up and have to be
replaced. Nonetheless, don't see kindergartners going to school with a USB
drive and a lunch bucket, nor do I see them logging into a computer at home
to do their fingerpainting. In any case, huge possibilities here for more expensive
textbooks like those I purchased in medical school.

Another option, however, is CD-ROMs. I have purchased several texts on CD-ROM
with access codes. Even cheaper would be ROM cards like MMC that are now used to
package video games, maps and the like.
