The explorers Louis and Clark recommended that the great american plains region never be plowed. The ecosystem was healthy and would continue to thrive if left to grasing. The govt ignored their recommendations and sent farmers to Homestead the region. This resulted in a devastating dust bowl catastrophy in the southern region. The Okies who migrated to the central valley of California have since developed a new culture of American pauperie. Other areas of the region were quickly depleted of natural nutrients and require extensive management with chemical and other types of fertilizer and pest control, and artificial irrigation. These elements leech down into the soil and create a brine layer somewhere near the water table. Each year that brine layer rises toward the root level of plants. Eventually it will be at the level of plant roots and we will have created the great American desert. The slow erosion from wind blowing over plowed fields is evident as sand piles up along fence lines and other boundaries. It would not be the first time in history that this creation of desert to replace rich grass land has happened.
