I think you are remembering wrong about LBJ. He was as much a captive of macnamara/rusk and is bush is of cheney/rumsfeld. I think both LBJ and Bush are decent men. LBJ resigned rather than divide the country further. Bush won reelection and now should reevaluate Iraq and whats best for the US going forward. I agree with you--killing sunni insurgents is not getting us very far. They are all over and play on the sunni fear of majoritiy rule (shiaa rule) as anything else. And now the arab sunni monarchs pile on with fear mongering over the shiaa. Shiaa have 60% of the overall participation and a far greater proportion in the south. Whether we will like what they create or not, it has to happen at least in the south. Three states ok by me too. Let the sunnis figure out how to interact later on with the oil rich shiaa and the oil rich kurds. They may have blown their chance and much like the palestiians have been encouraged to do so by the arab leaders. Mike
