All projections make assumptions.

True. I was just questioning that particular assumption.

In industrialized countries, women voluntarily have smaller families, while in rural countries, bigger families are the norm. I think the pressure to have lots of children is in part due to the desire to have extra help on the farm, but it's also social.

My dad had a male visitor from Honduras when I brought my second son for his first visit. The visitor exclaimed, when he saw my two sons, "Two boys! You get the big black hen!" In his culture, a woman who gives birth to sons is given special food, including a nice, big black hen all for herself.

Chinese people have very strong family ties, and want to have more than just one child, especially boys. That's why they kill baby girls. If they could have more than one child, they would not kill their baby girls.
