<Never having taken a course in electrical engineering nor having read a book on EE from cover to cover I alas know nothing of how the bytes are ferried around.>

Malcolm, having done a spot of electrical engineering and computer programming, I can tell you that little gremlins read the messages you put in via your keyboard, then they run flat out through the wires, or, more technologically tricky in the wireless world, they are converted via that wave function transformation you might have heard of, being transmogrified into quantum physics chunks like a jigsaw puzzle, whisked through the aether in pieces, then reassembled at the other end where they type out the messages again.

It's simple really. The engineers who make the computers and stuff are just good at jig-saw puzzles.

<She does point out that the VOIP phone doesn't do 911, so she has to keep her regular phone service just for 911.>

Now there's a business opportunity. Set up a service for VOIP users to make 911 work, maybe by routing through another network. VOIP also needs GPS in relation to 911-so they can find you (of course you may not want to be found!)
