I believe that it was an American PBY "loaned" to the British, co-piloted by an American naval officer ("training" the British crew), that found the German battleship Bismark (May 1941).

Thanks. I learned something from that. It doesn't really change my argument to the Left that Hitler never posed a threat of military occupation to us and we went to war with him on behalf of others rather than ourselves -- in essence, a war of choice, not of necessity. I would argue that Japan was a different matter, although one could take the position that even after Pearl Harbor there was little chance that Japan would do anything further to us, either.
