Marriage is a means to this end- procreation and thus has special place and priveleges.

Gosh, and all this time I had the notion that it was sex, not marriage, that caused procreation...

Oh, it is. So maybe we should give that "special place and privileges" to sex rather than marriage.

Oh, we seem to have...

Any people/nation must promote and protect the "family".

Seriously...

Our laws protect the family pretty much the same whether that family has a marriage certificate in a drawer or not. Why is that? Because marriage does not a family make. Focusing on marriage rather than family would not be constructive.

Protecting marriage has become and invalid proxy for family and something of a red herring.
