Sounds like Plateau, Alabama, where I grew up during the dark days of the depression. It's only saving grace was a paper mill that started up in 1929 as the Southern Craft Company, later the International Paper Company.

My dad was fortunate enough to work there three or four days per week during the depression. The company rotated shifts between men during the seven day a week operation so that as many as possible could earn enough to keep their families alive. My dad's wages for three days at 25 cents per hour was enough to feed his family of six, his mother, his brother's family of five, with a little left over for the offering plate at church on Sunday.

Them were the days, right?
