My predictions on the up coming elections in Iraq if nothing changes.

1) Tribal-ethnic loyalties will be the result. Shi'ite and Kurd with a noticable lack of Suni representation.

2) Increased tension not only from the Suni population but between tribal/ethnic interests.

3) Our occupation will increasingly become the source of anti-American vitriol throughout the world... possibly the catalyst for another world war.

4) We will get sick of the scene and begin to withdraw.

5) This will be the trigger for escalating civil strife and eventually civil war that remakes the regional borders.

My wish for an alternative would be a new Iraq where ideas and arguments win elections and stimulate change, renewal, and growth in the region... not likely.

The Economist article had a passing comment on Fallujah too:

In Fallujah, 40 miles (64km) east of Ramadi, the marines who survived the fierce assault on the town in November have a sardonic acronym for the skills it taught them: FISH, or Fighting In Someone's House. FISH involves throwing a hand grenade into each room before checking it for unfriendlies, or “Muj”, short for mujahideen, as the marines call them.

Given that Fallujah was more or less destroyed in order to "save" it, the "good intelligence" that particular operation depended on seems extremely hypothetical. The alleged smoothnesss of the operation seems somewhat hypothetical too, but that's another story.
