Yes, certainly. But we need to keep in mind that one of those values is to do no harm. Another might be not to engage in hubris thinking that we can decide whats best for a people. It is not only political democracy and the bill of rights and i know you know this.
The most pertinent news story today regarding iraq is not specifically about iraq but it is about the way people think in the mideast. The arab street apparently believe that the Tsunami was caused by an israeli, indian or US nuke test. Others want there governments to give no aid as they view the relief effort as a way christians steal money. This is part of the mindset there. The best we may be able to do in iraq is a free kurdistan, a moderate islamic republic in the shiaa controlled areas and a fight among the sunnis for control and/or a shiaa/sunni civil war. We just gotta be real from here on in. Ideology loses out when reality bites, i am afraid. mike
