"It resulted in stacks of punch cards, sometimes 1-3" high, being fed into card readers."

That's nothing. My wife used to write programs that used a most of a box of the cards - a stack a foot or more high - and a friend of mine would occasionally be seen returning from the lab with multiple boxes for one project. As for myself, I stopped taking computer science classes after trying to program in Theta and PL1 the first semester. Aaaahhh!!! ;-)

"For complicated programs, those decks would be run through the readers dozens of times."

Ever see someone drop a big stack of 'em? ;-(
