Patriotism sounds jingoistic, so maybe we should dump that term for some sort of National Domestic Partnership! <vbg>

What I mean is simply a commitment first to one's neighbor and a recognition that we share a common destination because of our close proximity to one another. This extends to our more distant neighbors at a sort of 1/D relationship (excuse my math leanings). First, my neighbor, then my town, state, nation, planet, ecosystem, solar system, etc.

People on Island A have similar hopes and dreams. This doesn't mean declaring war on Island B, but one needs to be aware that Island B may have people that would sometimes seek to rob you of what you have. Just be sure you're not provoking them...

That's about it. We do have a special place here and it would be good to share it with others through our good deeds - we should try that.

Patriot (from Dictionary.com)

One who loves, supports, and defends one's country.

Spinozas notion of "enlightened self-interest" also comes to mind.
