I wouldn't be surprised over the short term to see the Dems morph into the party for fiscal responsibility.

Its possible. If they went really strongly down that road I would be surprised but moving that way a little and talking it up a lot would not surprise me.

Remember that the Dems already enacted most of their big government platform over the last few decades and they've already compromised our freedoms about as much as they can ever expect to get away with.

I'm not so sure about that. In the past they have gotten away with more (look at some of FDR's laws and regulations), and things could always swing back. Even ignoring large unpredictable swings back (or in entirely new directions) I can imagine environmental rules becoming more restrictive if the Dems start gaining more power.
