I once had lunch with Paul Simon and his wife. Well, sort of. I was at the same table with him at a gathering of federal judges sometime around 1990. He was the guest of an attorney that was supposed to be briefing (actually rehearsing) me for an afternoon deposition in a civil suit. This was after his presidential run in 1988. He was very gracious, even after I identified myself as a Republican.

I have known a number of people that had a fair amount of personal contact with Simon. I have not heard one disparaging word. He never had a prayer in 1988. Too much class.

As for the afternoon's deposition, I was wearing my former auditor hat. The attorney ended up threatening to throw me out of the window from the 30th floor. It seems that he found my responses to be too verbose. His fault. He should have briefed me.

There has been some discussion of his sartorial preferences:
according to Freud the neck tie is a phallic symbol.
so maybe the bow tie symbolizes a chode.
