<There just happens to be maybe 1.odd billion that prefers otherwise, that is my guess and just a guess, >

Jay, as you said, the majority generally gets what it thinks it wants [until it later changes its minds and realizes that they made a big mistake].

What if the other 5 billion of us don't think it's a good idea to be ruled by that silly minority? Do we stop them when they invade Poland, or wait until they aim at somewhere else?

Just because 1 billion people [you have to be kidding that that many have got a clue about Taiwan] think it a good idea to take over Taiwan, doesn't mean the other 5 billion of us have to go along with it, and shouldn't nuke the bastards if they try it. That would certainly clear the air, and a lot more besides, and do a very deep cleansing.

If the whole world was asked, "Do you think that Taiwan should be taken over by force by China, and turned into a province?" I wonder if there would be a majority in favour. I'd be surprised.

There's a lot of concern about 150,000 people killed in a tsunami. A war over Taiwan would result in similar damage. I'd be surprised if many people are in favour of that.

As you say, Hong Kong is top dog in the Heritage Foundation's measure of economic freedom. heritage.org Note that New Zealand is not far down the list. Which dismays me because we are FAR from economically free. Government imposts, restrictions and general suffocation are enormous, though obviously not in comparison with other places. At least we have other benefits such as breathable air, clean oceans, potable water and a lot of greenery, no snakes or other nasties [other than the human variety].

Americans will be surprised to see how far down the list the vaunted "freedom" of the USA leaves it. But the USA has GDP per capita at the top, so that's more important really. worldfactsandfigures.com
