Timeline for devastating Asian tidal waves

PARIS, Dec 28 (AFP)
- Two days after a massive earthquake and tidal waves devastated a large section of Asia's coastline, the death toll is still rising.

The huge barrage of water which hit several thousand kilometres (miles) of coastline on Sunday has left at least 55,000 people dead. Tens of thousands of others are missing.

The earthquake which measured 9.0 on the Richter scale was the biggest tremor recorded worldwide since a 1960 quake in Chili which was 9.5 and killed more than 5,000.

DEC 26

0058 GMT: First reports from the Jakarta Geophysical Office that an earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale has hit the north of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The epicentre is located in the Indian Ocean, 250 kilometres (150 miles) south-east of the island. Reports follow that the quake was more powerful at 9.0.

0114: A report by the seismic alert centre in Hawaii which has just recorded the quake off Sumatra.

Indonesian geophysicists had a ringside on the "earthquake's epicenter" so, how come their firsthand measuring of a 6.4 magnitude got eventually doctored up to... 9?!? Oh, I should know better! Indonesian geophysicists are no match for their US counterparts thousands of miles away in Hawaii.... They must have fumbled with the logarithmic formulae....
