Is that what you meant to imply when you said joint maneuvers on chi territory and then followed with taiwan being chi territory. What do the russians gain. You didnt mean that, did you? > Yes I did. Not that Russia will take part in the actual invasion of Taiwan, which will be left to China's forces. Russia would act as Tonto, riding shotgun, sailing around the region to persuade Japan, South Korea and the USA that it's not really outsiders' business. As far as China is concerned, Taiwan is just part of China, in the same way that Alaska is considered part of the USA, and Quebec is part of Canada, and Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, the Kuril Islands are part of Japan, Ukraine is part of USSR, Kashmir is part of India, or maybe Pakistan, and Cyprus is part of Turkey, or maybe Greece - okay, let's split the difference. The civilized way to resolve such things is for the locals to hold elections and if the majority wants to separate, and they aren't taking all the oil or some other vitally important natural resource with them, then leave them to it. These days, natural resources are not very important in overall economics, other than in places like Saudi Arabia. Look at Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore as examples = not much in the way of natural resources but heaps of profits. Russia gains alliance and gas sales to China and pipeline construction and stuff. Russia is a Far East resident too don't forget, with Sakhalin, Vladivostok etc nearby. It wasn't all that long ago that the USA was flying spy planes down the border and over the border [resulting in the USSR shooting down the Korean airliner spy plane]. My brother, an ex 747 captain, showed me the charts and procedures for flying from Alaska to Seoul and it is absurd to think that the Korean pilots [the captain being the big chief captain who would be chosen to fly the South Korean leader around] didn't know how to do all the procedures that were required at various stages. Heck, I could have kept the plane on course, or at least known that it was AWOL. Russia has territory and presence in the Pacific Ocean area to defend, as well as allies. North Korea is under threat from the USA, South Korea and Japan, so there's some potential for a BIG fight. Polish up the nukes. Run the warhead modelling programmes. Fuel the B52s. It's the year of the Feather Duster. Orange alert, Mqurice
