This lucent deal and push on WiMAX mobile is big news. This hasn't hit as such big news because the WiMAX hype cycle is at a current low point. A lot of changes are taking place that has caused a bit of delay.. but has also increased the pool of companies involved and the potential for the developing industry. the vision has expanded to take on a much bigger chunk of the multi-billion dollar cellular industry. that doesn't seem to matter so much because the WiMAX industry will grow to be multi-billions in sales without becoming a significant part of the 4G mobile market... but that is what now looks increasingly likely.

Hold on through the doldrums of waiting for WiMAX to roll out.

Here is some of my analysis of the Alvarion-Lucent deal:

Lucent-Bell Labs has been a pioneer in MIMO and despite what some lamo editors recently wrote, Airgo is not the 'inventor of MIMO'.. what a joke! Do these editors know how to read? Airgo has several patents on MIMO techniques, particularly as they apply to WiFi, but is far from the originator... but Lucent/Bell-Labs can be said to be among the originators with Stanford University. And Lucent has moved on to develop the most promising theoretical models and then lab demonstrations and then silicon. They are the premier company in the field of applying MIMO to MC-CDMA and HSPDA.

BLAST and other advanced MIMO methods have been developed into demonstration silicon by Lucent-Bell Labs which has sought licensing:

comlab.hut.fi
A must read: mobilesummit2004.org

I could post more white papers on specific MIMO techniques and demonstrations of capabilities but that gets too 'techno-mumbo-jumbo' for this thread.

Here is what I think:

Alvarion has been saying for a few years that they have been working on MIMO-AAS but we have seen little evidence. That could be just because the technology wasn't ready for prime time for commercial products.. or that Alvarion wasn't cooking the 'secret sauce' sufficiently well to brag about it.. but ALVR doesn't tend to brag before products are introduced. This agreement among leaders more than plugs any whole that may have existed in the area of MIMO-AAS and should put Alvarion in a position of advantage. BLAST and related MIMO-AAS methods are a premier capability that have been nearing the point of being ready for widespread commercial application.. particularly for uses such as those envisioned for WiMAX. Besides MIMO, Lucent has excellent capabilities that should be an advantage to Alvarion.

Overall, this is an excellent piece of news. AT&T may not be that much of a leap of faith.. Alvarion needs partners to pursue opportunities that AT&T and other international MVNOs/ILECs could present. Lucent should be an excellent partner. We shall have to see more of what they have in mind.

I plan to attend the WCA show and will try to attend this reception. This should be a good exposition as it comes at a time when the stage is being set for the introduction of the first WiMAX Certified systems and movement towards 802.16e.

For now, take a nice bottle of wine off the shelf and celebrate.

Don't sell now... Hold for the next five years or until Alvarion gets bought out.

I am long ALVR since it was known as Breeze and still like it, but don't like the way the general market started in 2005 and have taken some profits.<g>

These are some comments I made about ALVR's potential last year:
