kirk..., People get altitude sickness on the top of Vail ski resort... After flying in from Frisco, flying up the lift and flying down the slopes and folding up with a major headache.

Vail Mt
Height of top station: 3527m - 11,571 ft
Resort height: 2475m
Vertical descent: 1052m

And of course the climbing of 4,300 ft gets progressively harder every inch above sea level.

The other consideration with hypoxia is hypothermia... and the bodies the movement of oxygen, which can happen at any elevation... wether your elk hunting, mountain climbing, climbing out of the Grand Canyon or walking on a beach, but this is another topic for pedantic hair splitters...
