LOL - pretty sure that at least a few of the operators that spent BILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars for 3G spectrum from '99-'01 would have felt the same was as Irwin....ain't gonna spend no 'mo money on the old spectrum and infrastructure.....gots me a new set of wheels!

As a matter of fact, they didn't start buying EDGE equipment in Euroland (primarily outside of North and South America) until 03 and 04 - with their backs against the wall, and EDGE being added to UMTS equipment purchases to soften the blow of multiple years of payment on spectrum they couldn't use. OUCH!

Thanks for all you do Eric....but not bashing Irwin

EricL, Woosh doesn't have voice available yet. They had planned to do so, but there must be a problem. < Supposedly they were going to begin offering carrier grade UMTS TDD-based VoIP service that would replace subscribers’ residential landlines by the end of 2004 or early 2005. Do you know if they have yet done that? >

EDGE is yet another extension of GSM which is, so far, working, much to my dismay. I am amazed how well the GSM Guild has extended their horseshoe technology - it's weird to see horseshoes still out there on the freeways, clopping along, attracting customers, but credit to them, they have done a great job. I am still waiting for a price war to sort out the men from the boys, which will involve capacity and data speed at low cost, which the GSM world can't win.

---> EDGE On The Brink ...

CHAPTER ONE

<snip> ... When I began my search for an answer to the puzzle of why the best firms can fail, a friend offered some sage advice. "Those who study genetics avoid studying humans," he noted. "Because new generations come along only every thirty years or so, it takes a long time to understand the cause and effect of any changes. Instead, they study fruit flies, because they are conceived, born, mature, and die all within a single day.

---> Within 12 to 18 months all but the lowest end GSM GPRS devices will be EDGE enabled, as will virtually all UMTS devices. ... Good call It's unfortunate folks weren't told that only works while sitting on a bench close to a tower and chews up voice channels ... Oh well.

Sometimes nice folk can be overtly diplomatic.
