"While I realize police always consider family members first, it just didn't fit in this case. I am a little disappointed, if I understand the article correctly, why you can say horrible things about people unless they are true. Perhaps I didn't understand it very well."

People speculate about their suspicions. They listen to innuendo and rumor. They consider circumstance and opinion in light of available 'evidence'. Then 'some people' make very strong allegations and promote them as facts.

Honor and decency requires us to consider the nobility of our human endeavor. Though it's more fun to gossip and point fingers, it is devastatingly destructive to falsely accuse another of a dishonest act. Lying is the most egregious example of betraying our trust with humanity. Accusing someone of being a liar without irrefutable proof is a betrayal to humanity and a horrible wrong when committed against an innocent person.

There is a great deal of that going on with respect to the US government right now. Are they all innocent? I doubt it. Are they all guilty conspirators? I doubt it.
