Yes, the ability to spread wartime fear and patriotic "unity" combined with the hard core fanatics on the religious right gave Bush a slim victory, although he has the lowest level of support of any 2nd term President in living memory. Bush indeed got away with the invasion in terms of saving his own skin -- he is good at that. Bush benefits from the war he launched -- although since it has good so terribly wrong he has not benefitted as much as he had hoped.
