There's no reason you can't have poverty and nationalized medicine. In fact, that's common.

Let's take the old Soviet Union. They had very socialized medicine. And were a 3rd world country run by oppressive thugs in spite of pretenses to the contrary.

Maybe economics does have something to do with this. And maybe it ought to override heartfelt principle in some cases. Suppose you have a seriously inefficient gov't and national health system. Every $ the gov't takes from your pocket to pay for that is one you could have used to enrich your life in other ways.

Back to pragmatics:
According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), in 1998, health spending in Canada was about $2600 per capita.
