If your horse gets out of his corral and wanders into the middle of the street in the middle of the night and a car smashes into it who will be held responsible?
The guy who hit it. He is responsible for the monetary value of the horse.

The same result SOMETIMES comes out of courts. You are not charged with a crime (depending on circumstances), but the victim's family sues for wrongful death, including earnings the victim would have made in his (presumed) remaining lifetime.

I hold Granny wrong in equating human and animal life. And anyone who says animal life has no value is equally wrong. And that is above just monetary value. The "cruelty to animals" statutes recognize this.
