The second amendment gives me the right to bear arms as a member of a militia....Being an individual of the USA, and prepared to defend my country to the fullest extent that I am able to perform, grants me the right to own, and bear, arms in the pursuit of that activity.

You've flip-flopped on "that activity." You were originally insisting on owning firearms to defend yourself against criminals in your home. Now you've switched to talking about it in terms of being part of a militia defending your country. Which is it? If it's the latter, you have a point. If it's the former, you're off base methinks.

I can see a need to own arms for either purpose, although I think the criminal defense argument is much stronger than the national defense one. The latter purpose is legally supported by the second amendment. The former simply isn't.

You want to be able to own guns. In case it still isn't crystal clear, I'm not arguing against gun ownership. I'm simply pointing out that gun ownership for the two purposes has a different legal basis. The second amendment doesn't cover your having a gun to dispatch a burgler as you have asserted.

What is it about that that's problematic for you? Either way you own your gun, which you can use both in defense of your country and defense of your person. Same gun--different legal basis for ownership. Regardless of the legal basis, the gun will shoot a murderer in your home or a terrorist. The gun couldn't care less upon what legal basis you own it. It shoots whomever you target with it. The second amendment is superfluous for all practical purposes.
