It doesn't appear to have ever occurred to them to discuss the keeping of arms as a right in and of itself.

I think it was automatic at the time to believe people had the right to arms. I don't think Europe was restricting them. In any case the argument will never cease. It has a "pacifist" basis on the left. They believe weapons are inherently evil.

CB, Aside from the second amendment, at the time of the constitution, and decades beyond, many of the citizens depended on hunting to feed their families. Other than native Americans, very few of them could have done that without a rifle.
