Israel is indeed, central to Middle East politics. It is the Great Excuse, the reason regimes can never reform - though a rational person might ask what the existence of Israel has to do with the possibilities of democratic reform in Saudi Arabia, say. If Israel dropped into the sea tomorrow, which of Saudi Arabia's problems would be solved?

Now, the US might indeed win some hearts and minds in the Arab world if they helped the Arabs do what they so badly want to do and destroy Israel. Israel's existence is a galling reminder of their own weakness and Israel's success (without even oil!) is a continual reminder of their own failures. Don't kid yourself that they really care tuppence for the Palestinians, whom they disdain and treat badly at every turn.

But fortunately for Israel, the citizens of America have a certain objection to helping to finish Hitler's work, even if America would benefit from the influx of well educated refugees.

"I do not want my government to put the interests of Israel ahead of the interests of America."

and you are charging that nadine, neocon and me are? Because you think that you are right on policy you question the patriotism of those who disagree with you. But continue to whine over questioning of patriotism of some organizations that oppose all US policies globally. In case you hadnt noticed, Palestinians held a successful election voting for a man who has called for the end of terror. Do you think this would have happened if Israel hadnt fought terrorism with resolve?
