I haven't been following your debate, so unfortunately I'm a bit in the dark about what everyone's perspective is. Karen's posting of a Wikipedia entry on "militia" completely perplexed me, for example. Wikipedia isn't a source of Constitutional scholarship, that I know of.

My understanding and perspective on the 2d Amendment (my own and my own only) is much like your own. The militia is the collective population of able-bodied male citizens. The people have an interest in preserving their right to arms, for collective preservation of their rights against the State or foreign invasion. My understanding at least was bolstered by that US Code provision, which seemed to indicate that the US military considers the body of fit, armed, citizens to be "the militia" which can be mobilized in time of national crisis.
