China's jobless set to increase by 11 million

Last Updated 10/01/2005, 18:45:45

China says it expects 25 million people to be out of work this year, but the actual number of jobless in the world's most populous nation could be much higher.

The China Business Times reports that some 11 million people, including university graduates, are expected to enter the labour maket this year.

The current number of jobless stands at 14 million.

China's official unemployment figure only covers registered urban jobless, and analysts say the true number of people without work could be more than twice the government estimate.

China has set a target urban unemployment rate of 4.6 per cent for 2005.

The country's official population hit 1.3 billion last week.
