There are moments in any revolutionary movement where folks do things they later regret. Not one of these movements you mention had terror lifted to the status of religion as the pals and al quaeda have. Sure we should take advantage of the opportunities presented when folks return from beyond the pale. Arafat didnt take that road. Abu Mazen has started out on that journey. For years he has been anti-intidada because it was counterproductive but i suspect that he knows that if terror becomes what a movement is about, it forever stains those people. How long will it be before serbs walk proudly again? How long did it take for the Germans to become accepted again post WW2?
Please note i am more in agreement with you than with nadine on this matter. I think there is real hope if there is multi sided movement to peace including pals, israels and the quartet. But the day after the next terror attack by hamas or one of the others, abu mazen will have no choice but to crack down and that will be key to the future of peace. mike

Rabin himself was one of the Irgun gang

That's like saying that Ulysses S Grant was one of Robert E. Lee's commanders in the Confederate Army!

Rabin was a commander of the Palmach, the elite Haganah division. Far from being a member of the Irgun, he was the commander who sank the Altalena, the Irgun's supply ship that ran the blockade in contravention to David Ben Gurion's order. This was in June 1948, when Ben Gurion brought the Irgun to heel.
