Oft unmentioned problem with plasma screens (you've got the common problem right about the cost): they will burn out, same as a CRT screen. (Also: no true black.)

Oft unmentioned problems with LCD screens: don't have wide angle of viewing or high contrast available with CRTs, visible 'bluring' on fast-moving scenes.

New technology for flat screens debuting this year (&, about which you will hear a lot over the next few years): OLEDs.

Organic (dye) LCDs offer the wide contrast ratio of CRTs, wide viewing angle, excellent color rendition, lower power consumption (important in laptops), but will still burn out in time... and are very costly just yet. (Should be cheaper then the other flat panel choices though before too long.) You can see small OLED screens in cell phones now.
