But even if they are obsolete it doesn't change the meaning of the amendment any more then if newspapers and printing presses stopped operating it would make the "freedom of the press" clause in the 1st amendment inoperative.

I see take your principle but I don't think you're applying it with enough discrimination. Newspapers with presses may become obsolete but there will be successor implementations that serve the same purpose. Freedom of the press will apply to successors. Militias are obsolete but there is a successor implementation. It's called the National Guard. They're the ones who need to be armed, not Joe Sixpack.
