They will do some of this, but if it is major you will see the Kurds and the Shias pretty well wipe out the Sunnis in a civil war.

That may sell ok in Iran which is 90% Shi'is.

But it will be a hard sell in Syria and Saudi Arabia. Both are approx 75% Sunni.

Besides, I am not convinced that wiping out the Sunnis in Iraq will resolve the problem. I do believe the Iraqis (left alone) can resolve their internal conflicts. But to get that done someone is going to have to convince Syria and Iran to stay out of it. We are attempting that politically, i.e. Powell's recent visits, but failing. The big question is how can we convince outsiders to stay out this conflict?

I see two possibilities... either rapid US withdrawal or expanded politics by other means...aka...war. I doubt our leaders view the first as a realistic and workable solution.
And so far we have demonstrated more of an inclination to increase our ME troop strength than decrease it.

We all should know what sending more US troops to a war zone means.

I think the Iraqi armed forces are about 6 months away from being effective

I hope you are right. If they are effective in 6 months or less it will go a long way towards achieving our goals in Iraq.
