Four people have been fired from CBS over the Dan Rather report on President Bush’s National Guard records. The network said the 4 employees were fired for slopping reporting and incompetent fact checking. The good news, today all 4 of them got jobs with the "New York Times”.

Leno - last night :-)

When I was a boy very few women worked outside the home. Today most do. In one generation we have in effect doubled the workforce and unemployment has actually dropped.

We don't give our economic system enough credit for this astonishing accomplishment.

It is a great accomplishment, but during the same period the numbers of workers per retiree continues to decline, because people are living a lot longer with almost no change in the retirement age.

I think if we indexed the retirement age to the average life span and/or changed social security to adjust for inflation rather than average wages the problem would be resolved.

I'm against social security on general principles but a commitment has been made to many millions of people who have planned their life around it so I wouldn't call for it to be abolished (at least not without a very very long phase out period) but would like to see indexing like what I describe above combined with some form of what has been called "privatization" for part of the money. I'm not sure Bush's plan is the best way to do it but if not his plan I'd like to see something similar.
