Zeus, Great piece, though the author way understates Moshe Dayan's fame at that time. He was and probably still is the most celebrated general the Israelis have produced, which had as much to do with looking like a pirate with the eyepatch as it had to do with being a great general. I know because I'm a big Yigal Allon fan and thought Yigal was shunted asidem in the history books when Moshe won the 6 Day War. Of course McNamara would see Dayan; he was a celebrity and everybody wanted to be seen with him.

I remember a friend in the army who claimed he wanted to be more famous than Moshe Dayan, so he was going to wear eye patches over both eyes. <G>

Much of the article reminded me of the airport scene in "A Fish Called Wanda."

John Cleese: "You Americans were defeated in Vietnam."
Kevin Kline: "We won that war."
Cleese: "You got your bloody arses kicked."
KK: "It was a tie." <G>
