In my mind this just shows that the new mac is here to rope in switchers.

It's a little like selling the iMac without flopy disc drive. It made the price look low and those who wanted them forked out a meager $50 or so to get them - the kind of small potatoes that Joe sixpack usually doesnt' bother worrying about when he price compares (after all, if he did care, he would take into account all the free software he gets, the total cost of ownership, the lack of viruses, etc. - which he doesn't). Sure, you need the mouse and keyboard to run the computer, so it's different than the floppy issue, but if Apple is really aiming at switchers, they're going to alread have a mouse and keyboard and it won't be an imositoin to switch them as well. Actually I kind of like the idea that switching promotes evisceration of the competition ;-)
And $500 puts the mini Mac in the range of iPod "add on gadget" -- well, almost.
